You've got a big decision ahead of you, a very important one. I'm glad that your thinking about it first and doing a little research.

Don't forget to include lifespan when you consider what species you want. Some birds can live for a heck of a long time! 60+ years! Also temperament and how much time it will need socializing with you. Some birds are very dependant (Cockatoo's) while other's can be very independant.

Do you have any bird clubs or bird rescues around you that you could visit with. They would be able to talk to you about their birds and give you a better understanding of what the various species are like.

No i have never seen one around, but my brother who lives in Austin told me about a bird rescue shelter there, but they have to come check your house in order for you to adopt one, and my house is to far for their driving limit. thats the only shelter i know about.

also im probly no going to get a bird for a few mounts, should it take me that long ot do research any ways?Huh??
I was looking at conures and i think they look like a great bird, one specificly, a green cheek. do oyu know anything about those, or can you direct me to a site that do's?

I have a green-cheek they are very lovable birds and need just as much attention as a large parrot, She loves to sit on my shoulder as I walk around the house and sleep in my hair, they are great for apartments, or smaller spaces.  They are very intelliget, Keegan can open her own cage.  they are a good price range, but make sure you check out the dealer or breeder because there tends to be a lot of inbreeding, i made that mistake and mine has a congenital liver condition which (somehow) causes her beak and nails to grow too fast.  She must have regular vet visits to trim them, although if your bird trusts you and has a mild temperment, you can do it with a dog nail trimmer.  They can be a little loud when ignored (like right now!!)  My little Keegan sounds a little like a blue jay sometimes, but the squaking can be a bit high pitched at times especially if i am in the other room and she is stuck in her cage.  If you have no other animals, I would suggest letting her ride around on you.  If she is alone in the room she tends to go a little crazy.  She's typically very friendly and i have converted a lot of orniphobics with her.  She is a sweet, loving, tiny ball of energy and needs lots of toys and attention.  They are also climbers so ladders and such are a good idea, due to the small size you won't need a very large cage and she likes to be out of it any way.  I have a gym sitting on top of her cage when i let her out (i also have cats so she gets cooped up alot, wouldn't recommend it, i am currently trying to find a home for the cats) she is calling for me now, so i must go.  I love my little bird and i'm sure you would too if you had one.  i hope i helped you out.

let me know if you have any specific questions

Cockatiels are very intelligent and loving birds.  I'd be trying to get a male bird because females that become very attached to their owner (In love Shocked) can lay alot of eggs which isn't healthy for them and they can become egg bound.  Good luck.

A Cockatiel may be a good choice for you.
Also, look at InfoPet's previous reply below about bird clubs etc., an excellent idea.
Good luck & hope you find the perfect bird for you,
